Maine’s independent beer and wine distributors and their more than 1,250 employees are citizens with responsibilities in the communities in which their businesses operate. They understand that alcohol is not like other consumer goods and can have consequences if abused or consumed illegally by underaged individuals. That is why beverage distributors take steps to ensure the safe and legal sale of alcohol and fight efforts to weaken regulations that exist to provide a safe and orderly marketplace. They participate in a wide variety of programs to promote responsible consumption and to eliminate drunk driving, alcohol abuse, and underage purchase and consumption of alcohol.
In addition, along with the National Beer Wholesalers Association (NBWA) and the Wine and Spirits Wholesalers of America (WSWA), we support legislation to protect public health and safety with regard to alcohol, including the Sober Truth on Preventing (STOP) Underage Drinking Act

Environmental responsibilities
Carbon Footprint
MBDA distributors are taking steps to reduce their operations’ carbon footprint. Investments in LED Lighting, energy-efficient refrigeration systems, solar energy, fuel-efficient vehicles, and best practices for efficient delivery routing are ongoing endeavors made by the member distributors. In addition, operational supplies such as plastic wrap, cardboard, lightbulbs, and batteries are all recycled at high levels.
Keeping Maine beautiful is a commitment that is close to the hearts of many who live in our state. The members of MBDA feel it is very important, as businesses and as residents, to do everything we can to preserve our natural resources and elevate the level of recycling awareness state-wide.
Beverage Container Recycling
In addition to our individual efforts to follow green business practices, our members are active participants in the state’s can and bottle recycling program, ensuring their empties make it to a can or bottle recycling center or are disposed of in an environmentally sound manner. MBDA is currently working with other entities within the state to modernize the bottle recycling program with a more comprehensive, state-wide initiative that will help Maine reduce its carbon footprint even further.

MBDA’s distributors and their employees avidly support the communities they live and work in – whether it involves coaching a local youth sports team or making a capital investment enabling the construction of a much-needed community center.
Each year, our members contribute more than $600,000 to Maine non-profit organizations and community programs. Our employees have donated an estimated 2,000 hours of their time annually from national organizations such as Boys & Girls Clubs of America and American Lung Association to small, community nonprofits and municipalities such as Special Olympics, YMCA, Junior Achievement, Goodwill, Salvation Army, United Way, American Legion, Rotary Club, Veterans, Fire/Police Departments, Food Banks, and Humane Society.
